Abstract Investigators are frequently searching for compounds as alternatives for insecticides to control stored product insects, these alternatives should be safe to human beings and environment. The investigators hope that the new compounds can overcome the problem of insect resistance to conventional insecticides. The current study aimed to find out insecticide substitutes, safe to mammals and environment, efficient in controlling rice weevil, Stiophilus oryzae, red flour beetle, Tribotium caslaneum and cowpea beetle, Calosobruchus maculatus. The following evaluations have been conduced on S. oryzae, T. caslaneum and C. maculatus: 1. Efficiency of conventional insecticides (i.e. malathion and agrothion) and compared with some alternatives. 2. Efficiency of plant dusts and plant oils. 3. Effect of inert dusts. 4. Efficiency of methoprene (insect growth regulator-juvenile hormone analogue) against the abovementioned insects. 5. Role of high temperature in control of stored grain insects. The tested compounds were applied in two ways: a. Preventive method: as the compounds were admixed with grains before insect infestation. b. Curative method: as the compounds are admixed with already insect-infested grains. The following parameters were evaluated: percentages of mortality, adult emergence, and reduction in Fi progeny of S. oryzae and T. castaneum. Also, number of laid eggs, egg hatchability and f] progeny reduction of C. maculatus. For all compounds and all insects, loss in grain weight and reduction in seed germination were evaluated. |
