Abstract

Pairi has been a major concern of humankind since our beginnings, and it has been the object of universal efforts to understand and to control it. Indeed, for there is reason to believe that pain is inherent in any life linked with consciousness. Apparently primitive humans had little difficulty in understanding pain associated with accidental injury but were mystified by pain -caused by internal disease.During the ancient times, there was a transition of man’s idea of the cause of pain from evil spirits to the commitment of sin, and subsequent punishment infected by an offended deity. As a result, the medical man was replaced by the priest, servant of the gods who, depended on prayers, the fundamental significance of the word ”pain” in English is derived from the Latin word poena, meaning punishment, and its relief through prayer. In addition to prayer, priests like the medical men of primitive people, employed natural remedies consisting mostly of herbs, the use of analgesic agents derived from plant life was prominent in all ancient cultures.
