Abstract

Nutritional support plays an important role in the management of nutritional deficiency in properly selected critically ill patients. A full nutritional assessment allows the calculation of appropriate feeding goals. The route of feeding enteral or parentral is determined by presence or absence of a functioning intestine and heamodynamic status of the pattent. The acute trauma induces a metabolic derangement, elevation in caloric expenditure and nitrogen requirement in response to stress of injury. This increased need can be met only (initially and to limited extent) by the body’s own available substrates.Failure to recognize and supply the nutritional needs of critically ill patients result in marked depletion of lean body mass, serious compromise of wound healing, vital organ function, immun response and level of consciousness. It is specially in these circumstances that malnutrition can become a major contributing factor to prolongation of recovery and increased morbidity and mortality. The nutritional formula should be carfully tailored to meet the needs of each individual patient.
