Abstract

Leptin was identified as a product of the obesity ( ob ) gene .Leptin is a 16 Kd protein mainly produced by adipocytes .Blood leptin levels reflect the amount of body fat during steady state conditions in man and rodents , where high levels of leptin are associated with high amount of body fat . Studies in mice suggest that leptin acts as an afferent signal in feedback loop from adipose tissue to the hypothalamus in regulation of energy balance and body fat mass Variations in leptin expression are influenced by a variety of factors including sex , hormonal stimulation , nutritional status ,sympathetic nervous system and adipose tissue distribution.Despite extensive human and experimental leptin researches ,its rule in controlling birth weight is not through by investigations .Therefore this study plained to find out whether leptin could be detected in maternal , cord and neonatal peripheral blood at concentration that correlated with birth weight and whether leptin concentrations were reduced in connection with physiological weight loss in healthy , exclusively breast - fed newborn infants to find whether leptin might be a regulator of nutritional status during fetal and neonatal life .
