Abstract

The monitoring of crustal deformations in seismoactive areabecomes nowdays very essential for the safety of human-beings and their economical acheviements. In general, monitoring of recent crustal movements in the regional, continental and global scales play a great role for understanding our earth. The geodetic technique is considered as one of the most accurate methods for monitoring recent crustal movements.During the last decades, the terrestrial geodetic techniques were applied in many areas all over the world. In the last years, the global positioning technique GPS are widely used for recent mivements studies in regional and continental areas. Thr results from the application of the GPS measurements for recent crustal movements all over the world added a good contribution to the study of the behavior of the tectonic plates as well as earthquake perdictions. Few examples from the applications of the GPS technique for moitoring recent crustal movements in local active areas are well known.
In Egypt, the traditional geodetic techniques were used in 1983, for the first time, for the monitoring of recent crustal movements in Aswan region. At the monotoring of recent crustal movemants in aswan region. A t this area three local geodetic networks and sub-regional geodetic network were established around parts of the active faults, after the accurrence of the november 14.1981 earthquake in Kalabsha area.
The repeated geodetic measurements of these networks were performed twice a year.
The fourth geodetic network were established around the high dam building. The geodetic measurements of this network using the traditional techniques were very difficult according to the effect of refraction, specially in the surrounding of the great areas of the High Dam lake. So it is a promise to try to use the GPS technique for measuring such local network.
