Lactuca sativa L. is an annual herb belonging to family compositae. It has been cultivated in temperate, subtropical and tropival lands. It has tender, highly developed radical leaves which are used before the flowering shaft appears. The plant is cultivated and naturalized in Egypt as an edible plant known as garden lettuce, under the Arabic name khass. In dolk medicine the infusion of the seed has been used as demulcent in bronchitis, also the seeds used in fevers particulary typhoid, the seeds oil used for relieving melancholia, headache, epilepsy and has antipyretic properties. Ageratum conyzoides L. is an ornamental annual erect hairy herb belonging also to family compositae, it has been naturalized everywhere and widely spread in tropical Africa and in most warm countries. In folk medicine the plant was used for healing woundas, burns, colic, abdominal problems, diarrhoea in children, uterine problems, skin diseases and as a remedy for dysentry. The plant also has antibacterial anthelmintic and insecticidal activity.
