Abstract

The primary objective of this study is to investigates the microbial vulvovaginitis among the symptomatic women admitted to the outpatient Clinics of Beni Sweef University hospital and El Fashn Central hospital. One hundred symptomatic cases were enrolled in the study program during the period from July 2002 to April 2003.
The study demonstrated that 17% of women attended the outpatient Clinic in Beni-Sweef University hospital were complaining of vulvovaginitis.
The history of cases revealed that 7% of cases were diabetic, 35% were using intrauterine device (IUD), 33% were using oral pills of contraception and most of cases were married (96%).
Differential diagnosis of cases divided them into four groups where VVC (vulvovaginal candidiasis) and BV (bacterial vaginosis) represented 43% and 24% respectively of total examined cases.
While cases of mixed infections (vulvovaginal candidiasis and bacterial vaginosis) represented 15%.
Finally 18% of cases were considered “No diagnosis” group.
Itching (pruritus) was significantly common among VVC rather than BV (P < 0.01) or No diagnosis groups (P < 0.05), while malodor was more common among BV rather than VVC (P < 0.01) or no diagnosis group (P < 0.05).
It was found that 34.9% of VVC cases using contraceptive pills while only8.3% of BV cases did.
Intrauterine device was more common among BV than VVC patients (58.3% and 27.9% respectively P < 0.05).
