Joyce Cart standa apart from the majority of Engkish novlists of his period in the circumstances of his life. He began to weite fiction too late in life. His in novel Aissa saved did not appear until 1932, when he was forty four. This was not because he lacked the techinival competence to write well, but because, ashe himself put it, helacked a proper education for his rule as s write. What he needed was ”a new education in ethics, in history, in philosophy.
