Abstract

Charlotte Bront6 (1816-1855) is considered as one of the most genuine and c r e a t i v e n o v e l i s t s who succeeded i n fusing her eutobiography and her novels i n an i n t e r - esting and sincere way. In her novels, She draws upon her own experience end protrays people among whom she lived and the persons who affected her. Her novels spring d i r e c t l y from her own experience of l i f e . The autobiographical elements i n her novels is the basic subject of t h i s thesis.It has proved that charlotte’s novels are strongly related to and r e f l e c t the various stages of her l i f e . It also concentrates on discussing the main themes that occupied her mind and were dominant i n her time. Thi s s tudy i s f i r s t meant t o sho~t h e importance of the close family c i r c l e of the Bronte’s a s the ares f r o m which charlotte’s imsginative works stemmed . It a l s o p o i n t s out and examines the influence of her widereadix and of those limited espects of the Victorian l i f e , i n which she involved,~:.pon her work. Through the vari~us chapters, the relet ion between her l i f e and experiences and her l i t e r a r y achievement has been a major concern. from the outset, the researcher r e a l i s e s t h a t it is e s s e n t i a l to know t h e influences t h a t affected the n o v e l i s t ’ s l i f e , end to exemine, not only the background of her family, but of the l i t e r a r y fashions of her time. It is also important to examine the actual places where, at various times, she lived. He spared no e f f o r t s i n following her from Haworth, Covran B r i d g e , Brussels to London. Really, much e f f o r t is devoted t o Brussels, where the me jor experience of charlotte Bront6’s l i f e occured. The first chapter is a rapid survey of the p o l i t i c a l , social and i n t e l l e c t u a l background of the early nineteenth century. During the first half of the nineteenth century t h e s o c i a l novel wss at its height. T h i s kind of novels deals with the social problems and how to solve them. charlotte BrontG t r i e s in her novels t o deal with some of the social conditions of her t irne. This chapter has pointed out the family and society a f f a i r s t h a t l e f t the deepest imp~ct on her thought and writings. Her school-life et Cowan Bridge, for instsnce, had a painful. influence on her writings. In add ition,,-the period she spent at Brussels WBS another f a c t m that helped i n forming her personal i t g and convictions. It wes an im?ortant stage i n her l i f e i n vhich her a b i l i t i e s end opinions stsrted to ripen. Also, inkier novels, charlotte is influenced by t h e romantic writers and by many of the i n t e l l e c t u a l phenomena i n her time.
