Abstract

The work reported here was carried out on the farm of the Dept. of Anim. Prod., Fac.of Agric., Kafr El-Sheikh, Tanta Univ.; the farm of sheep flock of the Desert Development Center (DDC) of the American Univ. in Cairo, Egypt and in the laboratory of Forage Sci., and Anim. Behaviour, Dept. of Anim. Sci, Fac. of Agric., Kyushu Univ., Japan, to study the possibilities of using sugar beet byproducts in animal feeding. 1- Dried sugar beet pulp (DSBP): 1 - 1 - Digestibilitv trials: Rahmani rams were used for evaluating three different pelleted concentrate mixtures. The control (ration 1) contained 18.0% yellow corn, 25.0 % wheat bran, 25.5% rice bran, 25.0% undecorticated cotton seed meal, 3 % molasses, 1.6% limestone, 1.0% common salt, 0.4% sodium sulfate and 0.5% minerals mixture. In the experimental rations (ration 2 and 3), 25 and 50% of the energy sources (yellow corn, wheat bran and. rice bran) of the conlrol (ration I ) were rcplaccd by I.’I’hc rations 2 and 3 were supplemented by 0.27 and 0.55% urea, respectively. Percentage of DSBP in the three rations (1, 2 and 3) were 0.00, 17.13 and 34.25%, respectively. Rams were fed rice straw 400- 500 g/head/day with concentrate mixtures. Rumen fluid samples were analyzed for, total VFA’s, NH3-N and rumen pH.
