Abstract llcterophyiasis is well known in. Egypt among inhabitants liv~ng around brackish water lakes such as Manzalla and Brulus (Markell and Goldsmith, 1984). The prevelance of heterophyiasis in ~ULII:p~e rsons was rcportcd-to excced 80% in some endemic areas (i\&ms ef al , 1986). Although heterophyiasis is asymptomatic or mild, yet dcath has been rcportcd liom cardiac and central ncrvous systcin colnplicitions especially in immunosuppressed cases wherc infection is tiilminani.. In Egypt, treatment of heterophyiasis must. be done because these is high prevalence of heterophyiasis together with the increasing need for imn~unosuppressive therapy ibr neoplasia, collagen’ diseases and organ tra~lspiantation( El-Kowrany ef al. ,1996 and blahn~oudc f u/.,2002 ). Praziquantel has been proved to be effective against Heterophyes izeteropiryes (Abo Shady et al., 1983),.. . -b ut its serious side effects I including carcinogenicity and mutagenicity iLd the development of resistant strains to the therapeutic doses of the drug, make it important to search for other new and safe drugs. .l’he present work was designed to study the eft’icacy of clorsulon and water extract of pumpkin seeds against Heteropltyes lzeteroplzyes in both imrnunocompetent and immunosuppressed mice In order to assess the efficacy of these drugs the following was done: , 1- Experimental infection of Swiss albino mice (immunocompetent and immunosuppressed) by encysted metacercariae fioh Tilupia fish then the treatment started two weeks post infection. 2- Intestinal adult count was done. 3- I-listopathological study of the intestine, kidneys and brain was carried out in infected and control animals 4- Scanning electron microscopic study on thc adult to study thc effect of treatment on its tegument. 5- The brains and kidneys were digested by potassium hydroxide to. detect any Hetmopiryes ova. 6- Indirect immunofluoresce~~cwea s done for the detection of any prccipitatcd Heteroplryes an tigcn or i~nrnunc co~nplcscs dcposi tcd in the tissues of infected mice. |
