Abstract There are multiple diseases which disturb the normal integrity of the surface epithelium these includes primary and recurrent pterygia, symblepharon, surgical trauma, and chemical injuries. Human amniotic membrane has unique properties which make it suitable as a surgical material especially in treating and preventing fibrosis. It was found to have strong antiadhesive, antibacterial and anti-inflammalory effects. It was also found to have wound protection, pain reduction and epithelization effects. It also characterized by complete lack of immunogenicity. So, the role of amniotic membrane transplantation is becoming increasingly established and has been used as an alternative to conjunctival autografting to reconstruct the conjunctival surface after removal of large lesions as primary and recurrent pterygia. This study included 30 patients of both primary (20) and recurrent (10) pterygia. All patients are submitted to retrograde excision of the pterygium and covering by preserved aminiotic membrane and followed up for at least 6 months At the end of the follow up period the results were 25 (83.3%) cases successful and 5 (16.7%) cases recurrent. |
