The origin of nucleic acid chemistry is generally attributed to friedrich miescher when he started in the 1860s to isolate the called nuclein from human pus cells it is a mixture of nucleic acids and proteins it took until 1910 1930 to clearly identify the composition of Rna and Dna constituents nucleosides nucleotides and until the 1940 to conclusively establish the hereditary function of Dna in 1954 james D wastson and francis H C crick came up with their model of B Dna the systematic study of metal ion nucleic acid interactions has many roots.
