Abstract

Cardiovascular diseases is considered one of fatal diseases in both developed and developing countries. It constitutes about 25 to 45of all deaths all over the world and 20 of all deaths in Egypt. The risk factors of cardiovascular diseases may be genetic as well as behavioral causes. The behavioral risk factors are: cigarette smoking, obesity, physical inactivity and unhealthy nutritional habits. Adolescent period is specially important in the development of cardiovascular diseases as it is the period during which adolescents start to smoke, physical activity is markedly decreased and unhealthy nutritional habits are established. The study was conducted aiming at detecting behavioral risk factors of cardiovascular diseases and the determinants of such behaviors among students in Alexandria governorate. To fulfill this aim, the study was conducted on a sample of 424 preparatory and secondary students. Two preparatory and two secondary schools(one for boys and another one for girls in each level) were chosen randomly from the list of governmental schools. Two private schools containing preparatory and secondary levels (one for boys and another one for girls) were chosen randomly from list of private schools in Alexandria. One class from third preparatory grade and another one from first secondary grade were chosen randomly in each school. For the execution of this work, a structured self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data about: 1- General characteristics of the studied sample: This includes data about grade, sex, type of school , parental education and socioeconomic status of the family. 2- Degree of student’s knowledge about cardiovascular diseases and their behavioral risk factors. 3- Attitudes of the students towards smoking, physical activity and healthy nutrition. 4- Smoking, physical activity, sedentary activity and nutrition behaviors of the students. 5- Behaviors of the students’ parents towards smoking, nutrition and physical activity. 6- Behaviors of the students’ peers toward the previous cardiovascular risk factors. 7- Degree of self-esteem of the students using the Arabic version of Copper and Smith. 8- Intentions of the students towards smoking and physical activity. After collection of data, statistical analysis was performed using mean, standard deviation, Chi square, Mantel Haenzel tests and multiple linear regression analysis. The results of the present study can be summarized as follows: The study sample included 424 students from third preparatory and first secondary grades in public and private schools of Alexandria governorate.
