Abstract

Adolescence is the period of transition from childhood to adulthood. It is characterized (a) by efforts to achieve goals related to the expectations of the mainstream culture and (b) by spurts of physical, ~ntal, emotional, and social development. Tooutline the different health, social, and emotional features of boys during the academic year 1983/1984 this study was conducted on 291 male pupils, from the different six educational zones of Alexandria Governo:r;-ate. The study included a questionnaire designed for the pupils, the data collected included social background, scholastic achievement personality and social maturity assessment, past history, present condition, anthropometric measurements for height, and weight, and laboratory investigation (haemoglobin concentration, stool and urine analysis). Analysis of the collected data revealed that , ,,’ the socioeconomic environmental condition were generally low and hinder the pupils’development, and did not satisfy their emotional tasks. The majority of pupils were born in big families (mean family size was 6.28 i 2.13 with overcrowded situation at home (crowding index was 3.6 ~ 0.4). The majority of their parents had very low educational level (58.76 of mothers were illiterate, 53.61of their ,fathers were illiterate or .read and write. The mean family income was 25.51+ 13.77 EL per capita/per month. As regards weight and height percentiles the results revealed that more than half of the pupils’ heights were under the 50th percentile(55.04). Similar result was recorded in the weight ’percentiles where 4.7.49 of pupils were under the 50th percentile. As regards the physical health condition of the pupils, it was found that they were still attacked and suffering from the main health problems which are common during adolescence. So, it was found that acne was present among 27.84 of them.
