Abstract

Lung cancer is the uncontrollable division and replication of cells in lungs. It is the most frequently cancer site in the world as it affects 17.6 of men and 5.8 of women. In Alexandria, the prevalence of lung cancer has increased in Alexandria during the last seven years according to Alexandria cancer registry 2003 to reach 4.5of all cancers. There are some factors related to prevalence of lung cancer, they act together as synergistics such as: age, racial difference, sex, alcohol, and socio-economic status. Some factors also can affect survival in lung cancer patients such as: grade of tumor, stage of tumor, metastasis, and type of treatment. Meta-analysis is a quantitative approach for systematically combining the results of previous researches in order to arrive at conclusions about the body of research. The aims of the study were: - To calculate the 5-year survival rate of patients with lung cancer. - To construct different models of survival rates of lung cancer according to different factors. - To perform a meta-analysis involving systematic statistical pooling of eligible studies concerning survival of lung cancer together with study results obtained from the first and second specific objectives. The present study was conducted in two phases: Phase I: to calculate the 5-year survival rates among lung cancer patients. Phase II: to conduct meta-analysis in lung cancer survival. Phase I: survival analysis The present study was conducted in the following treatment centers: - Faculty of Medicine (University of Alexandria). - Medical Research Institute ( University of Alexandria). - Gamal Abd El-Naser hospital (Health Insurance). A retrospective study was conducted for ten years from 1992 to 2001and a prospective study for one-year till the end of 2002. The target population was all available records of patients diagnosed pathologically as lung cancer in the previous treatment centers during the years 1992-2001. Data were collected using the following: - Review of medical records that included personal data, data about tumor, grade, stage, metastasis and type of treatment. - Follow up of patients was carried out through revisiting the treatment centers, sending official letters or making telephone calls. The results of the study were presented as follows: - A total of 1099 lung cancer patients were enrolled in the study.
