Abstract

Respiratory tract diseases are considered as a life threatening conditions that affect the infants and young children. Hospitalization of the child with respiratory disease is an anxiety provoking si tuation for him and his family. Since the child is dependent on his mother, so his recovery depends on her perception of all the facts concerning the diagnosis, treatment and care. During hospitalization and since the mother is resedent, she c~ cirry out the basic physical and emotional care for her child, she can act as a helper in the care team when guided and motivated to meet the child’s needs in a heal thy way. Although the mother may participate in the child care, the nurse must be responsible for the total nursing care. The motive for nurses intervention is the fulfilment of the profesional responsibility, while the motive for the mother is the fulfilment of her maternal role. In the same time the child needs both to meet his physical, emotional and therapuetic needs during hospital ization. So, nurse-mother cooperation is a complex set of behaviour - from both of them - leads to active participation to achieve a common purpose which is good child care. The objective of the present study is to determine the level of . cooperation between the nurse and the mother in caring for the hospi­ talized chil~ with respiratory tract diseases, and its impact on some items of care received by the child. The techniques used in the study were structured interview and observation sheet. A special scoring system was developed and used to assess nurse­ . mother cooperation, it was d~vided into three levels~ low, mode­ rate and high cooperation levels, depending on the answers of the twelve questions of the nurse, and eleven questions of the mother. The structured interview for nurses comprise the following items: qualification, length of experience, marital status. A scoring system was developed to assess the nurses knowledge about the disease. The structured interview for nurses also included twelve ques­ tions which were used as a part of the scoring system to deter­ mine the level of cooperation between the nurse and mother. The structured interview for mothers was developed to elicit information from mothers about:­ Child’s age, diagnosis and length of stay in hospital. Some characteristic~ of the mother such as: level of educa­ tion, working condition, parity, previous hospitalization experience. It also included eleven questions used as a part of the scoring system to determine the level of co­ operation between the mother and the nurse. An observation sheet was also developed and used to check-up some items reflecting the care received by the child and his environment.
