Abstract

Youngsters in a family context are the future parents in it. As previously expressed their knowledge about the different aspects of family health is the summation of their cultural herritage and their education in the different educational institutions, concent rat ion of care during the first period of motherOs lifee can contribute to great imporvement of good health for her body and her babyOs health condition. The aim of the present work is to assess the knowledge of Alexandria university female students about pregnancy and care of the new born. Two faculites were chosen randomly one from the theoritical group of faculties and the other from the practical group. The Faculty of Science represented the practical group of faculties, and Faculty of Arts the theoretical group. from each of the two faculties a meeting with groups of female students of the fourth year was done to collect data till 150 of them were interviewed with a total of 300 femal students. The present study revealed that the knowledge of female university students abou t some subjects of family health was not satisfactory whether these students were from the practical or theortical faculties. When 38 questions about care during pregnancy and care of the new babies were presented to female science and art students, no more than 58 of the questions were correct by 60f the students. This unsatisfactory standard of knowledge among university students is not a well preparation for family life. According to the results the following recommond ations a suggested programme about antenatal care and care of newborn for university female s~udents wa~ designd and recommended. Further similar study is required for males university students to ascertain and identify their knowledge regarding family life. Also within each faculty, the library should be supplied by educational materials such as books, panflets and booklets qiscussing antenatal care and care of the new born.
