Abstract

A comparative study in literature attempts to scrutinize the similarities and differences between two different writers affiliating to dissimilar cultures. This thesis is a study of the philosophical vision of human Life-experience in selected tragedies by Eugene O’Neill and Tawfiq Al-Hakim. It is a comparison between Eugene O’Neill, an American dramatist, and Tawfiq Al-Hakim an Egyptian one. This study falls into three chapters and an introduction. Each chapter includes a
separate theme in the selected plays of the two writers.The first chapter considers the theme of human greed and possession in O’Neill’s Desire Under the Elms (1924)and Al-Hakim’s The Death Game (Li’b’at alMawt,1957). O’Neill, in Desire Under the Elms, was writing about the theme of possessiveness in money, in property and in love. In this play, the problem of the heroine is her homelessness or, in fact, her urgent need for home. Al-Hakim’s The Death Game (Li’bat al-Mawt) is about the effect of atomic radiation on the hero in motivating and aggravating his thoughts of greed and possession. In both plays, love is the remedy of such base instincts because it is a sublime emotion.The second chapter investigates the quest for happiness and truth throughout life in O’Neill’s Strange Interlude (1928) and Al-Hakim’s Princess Sunshine (Shams an Nahar, 1965). The two writers adopt dissimilar techniques to clarify their vision. In Strange Interlude, O’Neill uses the interior monologues, the technique of speaking thoughts aloud directly to the audience. The interior monologue is considered a new theatrical convention and is paralleled to the use of masks as they reflect! a contradictory point of view of the protagonist. The nine-act play follows
