Abstract Epilepsy or seizure is a common health problem. It is as old as the human race; most epileptic cases are in African countries. Children with seizure disorders need anticonvulsant drugs with proper nursing care. The nurses’ ability to protect the child during and after seizure from the hazards and institute appropriate care significantly affects the epileptic children’s immediate survival and later development. The aim of this study was to assess nurses’ knowledge and performance related to care of children with seizure disorders at Assiut Pediatric University Hospital. Subjects of the study included all nurses and nursing supervisors working in the emergency, neurology, Gastroenteritis, Intermediate care, and general pediatric units at Assiut Pediatric University Hospital during the period from November 2004 to July 2005. Their number was 102. Questionnaire sheet and observation checklists were developed to assess nurses’ knowledge and performance concerning seizure disorders. It included the biosocial data of nurses and nurses’ knowledge regarding seizure disorders, nursing care during seizure, nursing care after seizure, and seizure’s precaution. The observational checklist was developed to assess nurses’ performance about care of children with seizure disorders. It included the nurses’ performance regarding nursing care during seizure and nursing care after seizure. |
