Abstract

Dam is one of the most importantDam is one the most important hydraulic structurs, which is used for protection and storing water to be used in the different purposes of development. In general dams could be classified into many types according to their use or their material of construction. One type is the concrete gravity dam, which is the concerning subject of this thesis. The concrete gravity dam is built of massive plain concrete. Its weight resists the applied forces due to the water pressure. This huge massive structure causes large stresses in the soil underneath the dam.So, the stresses and its settlement must be considered in the analysis. In this research, different cases of non-homogeneous foundation under concrete dams are investigated.
Conccrete gravity dams are subjected to many types of loading .The dam behavior under load combinations is studied in detail in this thesis. These loading cases include:
1-Static loads
2-Hydrostatic loads
3-Thermal loads
4-Seismic loads
2-D and 3-D finite element analysis using the computer soft ware, COSMOS/M, are performed on the concrete gravity dams under the effect of various combinations of the previously mentioned loads . Then, the structural behavior of these dams is evaluated. Conclusions and recommmendations for design of concrete gravity dams are provided. A fortran program is developed for design and analyses of dams. The results obtained from this program are compared with those of the finite element analysis. This damis chosen because it is suffering from some cracks with unknown reasons. The dam will be analyzed under different load conditions and combinations to predict the reasons of these cracks. A method of treatment and repair of cracks is also recommended accoeding to the analysis.
Finally, on the light of current study, important concluding remarks and design recommendations are given.
