Abstract

The overall objective of this thesi is to built a different knowledge based for managing the power system planning process. The use of this system is to facilitate the job of the planner, taking into account the developed prototype which covers the main important activities of the planning process. These activates include: the load forecasting, the generation expansion planning, the transmission planning and subsequently, the optimal cost/kwh for the planning stages.
In the load forecasting process, estimates of long term peak demand forecasts obtained by the direct applications of multiple regression model forecasting methods. The new approach is used establishing a new mathematical relationship between the historical annual level of electricity consumption. Gross domestic product GDP, population , and the load factor. This new method is applied using the historical data of egyptian power system for the period 1990-2003 and calculating the percentage error for verification purpose.
An application of the new approach is used to provide the load forecast required for egyptian-jordanian unified network.
Also, The new proposed technique of artifical neural network back propagation training algorithim is used to provide the peak load forecast required for the same Egyptian -jordanian network directly from the historical data for both egyptian & jordanian system each separately, then the calculating percentage error is compared for bith cases.
Another application for using the new proposed technique of artificial neural network back-propagation training algorithim, is where it can be used for calculating the peak and min-load distributed among the different zones of the egyptian power system of Egypt up to the year 2010, directly from the historical actual data for total peak and min-load of the whole egyptian power system for the past ten years.
The generation planning, defines the optimal location of the generation unit to cover the required load forecast and to meet the satisfaction of all technical and environmental constraints, as well as to reduce the min-cost for the transmission plan.also, the economical concern is the basic goal for the building and operation of the power plant, therefore the optimization technique is used to get the min costlkwh of these site selections, as well as minimizing the transmission lossed cost.
