Abstract

Alexandria is still facing the problem of pollu-tion of its beaches by the disposal of’ its crude and treated sewage in it. This could be a real public health hazard to which swimmers are exposed, especially on beaches, :I,n which outfalls are very near to the area where swimmers are present. The present study aimed to evaluate this problem, by determination of the two common indicators of fecal pollution, E. coli : Alexandria beaches (Anfoushi, El Kashafa, El Shatby, 1 Thrahimia, Sporting, Sidi Gaber, Stanley, Gleem, Sidi Bishr. No. (1), Mandara, Mo1itazah- and Maamoura) were and fecal streptococcal counts. A total of 216 water samples f’rom 12 selected examined by the membrane f’il ter method. Identification of’ these indicators were done according to the standard method§ for the examination of’ water and waste water, (1980). Membrane filter f’ecal coliform agar (M-FC) was used as a selective culture ~dium for fecal coliforms, and KF streptococcus’ Agar was used for fecal streptococci. The membrane filters used were, Millipore membrane filters type HA, and MFS membrane filters, (with pore size 0.45 urn and diameter, 47 nun). from the results of the study it was found that, the two indicator organisms were detected in all of the studied beaches. Thus all Alexandria beaches are considered ~o be polluted. These beaches could be classified into least, moderate and highly polluted beaches. - Maamoura and Montazah beaches had the lowest counts of the indicator organisms. They are considered to be least polluted. - sporting and Gleem had the highest counts. .Anfoushi, El Kashafa, El Shatby and El Mandara had also a high count of the indicator organis~. Thus all are 90nsidered to be highly polluted beaches. - Ibrahimia, Sidi Gaber, Stanley and Sidi Bishr” No. (1) had bacterial counts in between and are con sidered to be moderately polluted. These results may be attributed to the effect of sewage disposal in the coastal waters and partially to the swimmers-as a source of pollution. No statistical significant differences were found between the months of study. But it was found that the bacterial count increased in cold months (October, November, and December) in the beaches having sewer outfalls, as these outfalls were opened partially in sunnner. The results also showed that the fecal strepto coccal count was higher than that of E. coli. - 1 It can be concluded that the disposal of the untreated sewage into the sea water causes public health haz”ards to swimmers who are exposed to it. A new sewage . disposal scheme. without disposing a DROP of sewage into ,’. the bathing beaches has to be decided.
