Abstract

The ASA task force defined a difficult airway as the clinical situation in which a conventionally trained anaesthesiologist experiences difficulty with mask ventilation, difficulty with tracheal intubation, or both.
The laryngeal mask airway ( LMA) is an airway device which , when blindly inserted into the pharynx forma a low pressure seal around the laryngeal inlet, it typically provides a clear, unobstructed airway, even when used by practitioners with no previous experience.
There are different types of LMA including standard LMA, flexible LMA, intubating LMA, double lumen LMA, double cuff LMA and proseal LMA.
The proseal laryngeal mask airway was described by Brain in 2001, there is an additional drain tube placed laterally to the airway tube, this tube allows easy passage of a gastric tube, which enables emptying of the stomach of gas or fluid.
In the present study 50 patients were allocated either in LMA group or PLMA group peak airway pressure, inspired tidal volume, expired tidal volume, pulmonary compliance, oxygen saturation, EtCO2, HR, MABP, leak fraction and epigastric auscultation at the following 4 tidal volume / cuff volume settings tidal volume 8 ml/kg / cuff volume 15 ml, tidal volume 8 ml/kg / cuff volume 30 ml, tidal volume 12 ml/kg / cuff volume 15 ml, tidal volume 12 ml/ kg / cuff volume 30 ml.
The result in this confirmed that the proseal laryngeal mask air way (PLMA) and classic laryngeal mask airway (CLMA) are suitable devices for positive pressure ventilation .
