Abstract

The study included a hospital as well as a field work. The hospital based study included at the start 153 cases significant bacteruria on mid-stream urine examination. The cases of them showed simultaneous significant bacteruria midstream and suprapubic aspiration urine samples with infection with a single isolate. These 111 cases were studied clinically, eradiologically, bacteriologically and were examined for urine findings and for response to treatment. The field based study included 285 school children from three villages with different durations of perennial irrigation system. Urine was examined for S. haematobium ova. Urine culture was done after preliminary screening test for bacteruria.
In the rural school-children significant bacteruria was found in 2.1% and was limited to bilhariza ova passers. In all positive cases the isolate was E. coli. In the village with recent perennial all examined school-children were negative for bacteruria whether thery were passers or non ova passers.
In the hospital based study the most frequently encountered organisms in the bilharzial group were. E.coli and klebsiella followed by pseudomonas pyocyaneus then proteus. In the non-bilharzial group the most frequent.
