Abstract a) Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common disruptive behavior disorders of childhood. The key characteristic of ADHD are impairments in attention, regulation of activity, and impulse control. It is characterized by an early onset, and socially disruptive behaviors that produce more distress to the patient’s environment than to the patient himself. The symptoms must be manifested in at least two settings (e.g. home and school), and there must be evidence of interference with age-appropriate social, academic, or occupational functioning. The disorder is more common in boys than in girls. Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders fourth edition , emphasizes the diagnostic heterogeneity of ADHD by describing three subtypes which are : inattentive type, hyperactive-impulsive type, and combined type. In the past, most physicians believed that ADHD disappears in adolescence. It is now known that ADHD is a life long problem and that children may not grow out the disorder at puberty |
