Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the nutritional status of Egyptian leukemic children at first (1st) presentation, as well as to reassess their nutritional status after the use of integrated dietary supplementation planned (as in the dietary protocol mentioned in appendix(4)), while giving the induction therapy.
This study was conducted on 50 newly diagnosed patients with to have Acute Leukemia. Patients were divided into 2 groups; their ages ranged between 2 – 12 years with a mean and standard deviation of 6.24±3.49 and of 5.40±2.25 of Group1(S) and Group2(US) respectively. They were 35 males and 15 females. They were admitted in the National Cancer Institute, Pediatric Oncology Department, Cairo, Egypt. All patients were subjected to dietary questionnaire at time of diagnosis; complete physical examination with emphasis on anthropometric parameters (S.F.T., M.A.C. and weight). Patients were subdivided into 2 groups; Group 1(S) including patients who received dietary supplementation and Group 2(US) including patients who were on the regular diet without receiving any dietary supplementation and were subjected as controls. Serum Prealbumin and Transferrin were measured (Radial Immuno diffusion) in all patients at time of diagnosis.
