Abstract

A sample of 50 nurses from the nursing personnel working in different maternal and child health centers, family planning centers, out-patient clinics affiliated to different maternity hospitals and health offices were studied. The pre-requisites were that partic~pants did not receive any type of training before, were engaged in family planning activities and were willing to attend the programme. The audio-visual materials used were; charts, models. slides. ideal equipments, films, pamphlets, flip charts as well as samples of contraceptives. The tools used in the present study: 1- The ~re-test: A structured test was designed and administered to the choos~n sample at the start of the in-service educat ,ion pro~e. 2- The post-test: ” The same previous test was administered as a posttest immediately after the completion of the in-service education programme. 3- Questionnaire related to immediate evaluation of the pro~ramme as expressed by participants: A structured questionnaire was designed and administ ered to the participant at the last session of the inservice education programme to find out their reaction to the programme content, ,time, duration, methods of teaching utilized in the programme and suggestions for its impro vement . 4- Follow-up of participants: , All the participants were contacted by the investigator after a period of two months at their place of work I to assess their retained knowledge and performance. A pre-structured observation check list was develop ’r ~d and used uO evaluat& their performancci. Also Beast was administered to test their knowledge. Results of the in-service education pro~ramme evaluation: 1- The present in-service education programme succeeded in improving and increasing the participants knowledge. . The differences between their correct answers in the pre-test and in the post-test were statistically signif icant . The programma had its impact both on the quality and quantity of knowledge gained by nurse in all areas of family planning. , 2- The in-service education programme administered helped ~urses to retain their knowledge two months after itr. implementation. This was evident from the significant differences observed in their correct answers in the pre-test and that in the follow-up test. 3- The programme succeeded to make nurses acquire a positive attitude toward the concept of family planning, contraceptive methods and the role the nurse should , play in ~his field. 4- The present in-service education programme helped nurses working in family planning to perform and carry out their duties and responsibilities in a satisfactory manner. This was evident during the investigator’s observation in their place of work. It was observed that nurses who worked in the field of family planning for less than ten years were more likely to perform the expected activities better than those whose years of experience were ten years or more. On the whole the programme succeeded to motivate all participants to perform their functions better. ~ 159 .
