Abstract

the study was carried out in oneafthe reclaimed villages near Alexandria, Abbis (2) village” The aim of this study was to estimate the magnitude of heal th problems of the elderly in Abbis (2) village. This aim was achieved through the following intermediete targets. 1. Assessment of health status of aged population in Abbis (2) village. . 2. Determining various ecological factors !n relation to .I the health problems. 3. Enquiring about the needs of the elderly to develop a final recommendations for the geriatric care in a rural area. The tools used were an interviewing schedule, clinical examination and laboratory tests for sugar in urine. The questionnaire was pretested in a pilot study, then was utilized to collect the following data: personal data, family feature data, reproductive data, socioeconomic and environmental data, data about nutrignal habits, data concerning the psychological aspect of the elderly, asking about their past and present complaints followed by syste. matic examination. Laboratory tests for sugar in urine and lastly the data about services utilization. All people aged 60 and over in Abbis (2) village were included in this study. They were found to be 150 indivi~ duals. Analysis of the collected data revealed the follow­ ing results. Personal characteristics data: . . Females predominate males. They constituted 52 of the elderly in Abbis (2) village. The rest were males. The mean age of both males and females was 64.9 years. . 90.3 of males and 34.6 of females were married while those who were divorced and widowed were 9.7 and 65.4 of males and females respectively. . More than half of the males (54.2) and most of the females (89.8) did not believe in the role of diet in keeping good health. Socioeconomic data: - High illiterecy rate was prevalent among the elderly. 2/3 of males (68.0) and all females were illiterates. - The majority of males (70.8) were still working as farmers while females were mainly concerned with the household activities (89.7).
