Abstract

Patients with thyroid dysfunction usually have disturbances ofbody weight, food intake and thermogenesis. Decreased body weight, increased appetite and increased thermogenesis are characteristic featuresin a high percentage of hyperthyroid patients, While the opposite ischaracteristic of hypothyroidism.
Leptin seems to have an essential role in the regulation of foodintake and energy expenditure and thus in regulating energy homeostasisand secondarily, body weight.
As both thyroid hormones and leptin have effects on similaraspects of body homeostasis, it is not surprising that a number of animaland human studies have investigated the relationship between leptin andthe thyroid hormones.
In a trial to clarify the possible effect of thyroid status on leptinlevels the present work had been can-ied out on a total number of 40 adultmale albino rats.
The animals were divided into 4 equal groups: -
Group I : Sham operated group.
Group II Hypothyroid group. Hypothyroidism was induced bysubtotal thyroidectomy, followed by the administration ofpropylthiouracil in drinking water (0.02%) for 28 days.
Group III : Euthyroid control group.
Group 1I Hyperthyroid group. Hyperthyroidism was induced by regularadministration of L-thyroxine (T4) (0.6 mg\Kg body weight)orally twice daily for 13 days.
