Abstract
The present study was conducted on forty patients, classified into three study groups, to investigate the effect periodontal treatment on the relation between inflammation (taking TNF-α as inflammatory marker) and insulin resistance in patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus. Group I included type 2 diabetic patients with chronic periodontitis, Group II were systemically healthy patients with chronic periodontitis and family history of type 2 diabetes mellitus, while Group III included type-2 diabetic patients without chronic periodontitis and was considered as a control group. Group I and III were the diabetic groups.
Circulating TNF-α level, HbA1c, FPG, SIC as well as, insulin sensitivity assessed using HOMA-IR were measured before and after periodontal treatment that were composed of conventional mechanical treatment with adjunctive systemic doxycycline therapy.
The present study revealed the effect of periodontitis on diabetic parameters presented by higher levels of TNF-α, HbA1c, FPG, SIC as well as, HOMA-IR in type-2 diabetic patients with periodontitis compared to those without periodontitis, Furthermore, insulin resistance was also detected in off-springs of type 2 diabetics with chronic periodontitis.
