Abstract

Was to deign and to contrast a biofilter for removing biological and chemical hazardous loads from the primary treated effluent ( PTE) of the wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) at Alexandria Sanitary Drainage Company ( ASDCO)
For the evaluation of the PTE collected from the wastewater treatment plants in Alexandria ., series of biological and chemical analysis was been carried out to determine the properties and constituents of the effluent . The biological and chemical pollutants in the tested effluent have been outlined in comparison to the standard specified in Law 4/1994
The following results represent the chemical and biological contents of the primary treated effluent collected from WWTP
I- Parameters above limits of Law 4/ 1994)
Intel (PTE) Law / 1994
1- BOD5 (mg/ L) 15.7 60
2-COD( mg/L ) 387.0 100
3- TSS ( mg/L) 289.7 60
4- Phosphorus ( mg/l PO3 4 MOV) 23.0 5
5- TC( count/ 100 ml) 6.8X 10 5 N.I
6- FC( count/ 100 ml) 5.7X 10 5 5000
7- Iron , Fe mg/ L) 2.84 1.50
II- Parameters within the allowable limits of Law 4/ 1994 , are
1- ( mg /L) 945.3 2000
2-TVC mg/ L) 410.0 1800
3- Nitrogen ( mg/ L TKN) 35.3 40
4- TBVC ( CFU/ L) 15.4 X 107 N.I
5- Lead Pb (mg/ L) 0.46 0.50
6- Cadmium Cd ( mg/ L) 0.021 0.05
A bench scale biofilter was designed , using various supporting matrices to remove or to reduce , those parameters to with the requirements pf Law 4/ 1994 to find which of the tested supporting matrices at the most efficient and economic to be used for constructing the system. In addition , a comparative study was carried out . The performance of the treatment system was based on the technology of biofilm process which requires culturing and fixing certain bacteria onto the tested supporting matrices.
The selected bacteria used to form the biofilm consortium in this research work were Burkholderia cepacta , Pantoea agglomerans , Baccillus sphericus , and Bacillus cereus . which proved in previous studies to be efficient in removing heavy metals from polluted water.
