Abstract

Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiac , cerebral and renovascular disease . Since damage to target organ is the principle source of morbidity and mortality associated with high blood pressure and the early detection of target organ damage is important as the vigorous control of blood pressure with anti hypertensive medications can regress the target organ damage and the consequent morbidity and mortality can be reduced.
Target organ damage is more closely related to ambulatory blood pressure monitoring than office measurement.
The current study included 40 newly diagnosed untreated hypertensive patients. The aim of our study was to evaluate the behavior of cardiac arrhythmias and the incidence of left ventricular hypertrophy in dipper and non dipper patients In the current study 62% of the newly diagnosed hypertensive patients were non dippers while 37.5% were dippers. Sixteen % of the non dipper patients had left ventricular hypertrophy which was highly significant, 76% of them had cardiac arrhythmias.
