Abstract

The aims of this study were to assess the pattern of drugs of abuse according to age and gender for all patients admitted to the poison control center of ain shams and el-minia university hospitals. Evaluating the concordance between the clinical assessment, including patient history by the physicians on duty , and the drug analysis for those patients. Estimation the maximum period of detection of these drugs in blood and urine. From this study , it was concluded that drug abuse is a major health problem in Egypt (4% of the total number of patients admintted to the PCC) and its emergencies represent a major cause of death in the PCC(24.3% of deaths in PCC). This problem was pronounced among young males; in the age group 20-40 years and unmarried. Most of them were manual workers.
