Abstract

Nausea and vomiting (morning sickness) is a common symptoms during early pregnancy considered an important diagnostic symptom of pregnancy, however the exact cause and mechanism are not yet well understood. The main aim of this study is to provide a detailed description of the patterns of nausea and vomiting during the first trimester of pregnancy, that would help in designing plans for health promotion of the pregnant women. The study was conducted at the maternal and child health centers of Zagazig City, with a prospective cohort research design. The sample size was 250 cases, recruited from attendants at 5th week of pregnancy till 14 weeks. The tools of data collection were a structured interview questionnaire and follow up sheets. The results of the study revealed that cooking smell, eating of certain foods, cigarette smoke and stress, were the most common factors which trigger symptoms. The study points to the high rate of success of home remedies in reliving symptoms. Morning sickness is harmless and does not disturb the women’s health or her fetus unless severe cases and if untreated. The study recommended to provide programs for raising awareness and health education about factors precipitating arid reliving nausea and vomiting and encourage home remedies and herbs to relive symptoms.
