Abstract

Maltreatment of children is a serious problem that affects children from all social and economic levels. The residual effects of maltreatment of children has profound implications not only for the child, but his / her family at large. The problem of child abuse has received dramatically increased attention both medically and socially as it is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in childhood and has devastating consequenc~s for its victims and even the generations that follow through out their lives. It is estimated that between one and four million children suffer from child abuse each year nationwide.Schools represent an important system involved in safe grounding the well-being children and often are the first intervening to interact with the victimized child, report suspected abuse, and provide supported services for the child. Teachers in this process through their daily contact may play an integral role with the child in circumstances, which allow the keen observation of a child physical, intellectual functioning and socialemotional functioning. The aim of this study is to assess the school teachers’ perception of child abuse and neglect and their identification of the predictors and indicators.
