Abstract The present study was carried on to evaluate collagen membrane used in conjunction with transmucosal (one-piece) implants placed in healed and fresh extraction sockets. Ten implants were placed in seven subjects, five implants were placed in fresh extraction sockets (Group I) and five in healed sockets (Group II). Collagen membranes were placed around implants of both groups. Extraction of teeth for Group I was performed with minimal trauma to preserve the integrity of the alveolar wall. Atraumatic surgical technique for implant placement was applied. Temporary acrylic crowns were cemented to the implants immediately after its placement. Thus immediate loading was performed for both groups. Temporary crowns were adjusted to be free from occlusion (non-functional loading). Final ceramic restorations were fabricated and delivered after four months. All subjects recovered well after surgery, they showed no complications throughout the evaluation period. One subject of Group I lost two implants soon after placement of final restoration which was performed two months after implant placement. An additional implant was then placed in a fresh extraction socket of a newly selected subject and final restorations for all subjects were delayed to be four months after implant placement. Clinical evaluation was performed at 3, 6 and 9 months using: Plaque index, bleeding index, probing depth, clinical attachment level and mobility of implants. |
