Abstract In recent years, low molecular weight heparins (LMWHs) have attracted increasing scientific and clinical interest as anti thrombotic drugs. Their clinical investigations have mainly been focused on the prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) following surgery. LMWHs have a different pharmacological profile from unfractionated heparin. They have a longer half-life, higher bio-availability and have been reported to have anti thrombotic effects when administered subcutaneously once daily. Because of these properties LMWHs were considered to be promising anti thrombotic agents for the prevention of thrombo-embolic diseases. The present study was performed to investigate the efficacy and safety of LMWH (Fraxiparine) relative to that of the low dose regimen of heparin (5000 units subcutaneously twice daily), and detect the association between venous thrombo-embolism and anaesthetic technique. The study included 90 adult patients class I and 11 ASA status, admitted into orthopaedic department, Zagazig University Hospital. Patients who were scheduled to have hip replacement (Total or hem i-arthroplasty), kneearthroplasty or femur neck repair were eligible to participate in the study. A full medical history was taken including a detailed case report giving particular attention to bleeding and clotting disorders. A physical examination including an examination for pre-existing thrombo-embolic diseases |
