Abstract

Lichen planus is a cell mediated mucocutaneous immunologic disease that occur on the skin and oral mucous memberane. Clinically, oral lesions are usually of bilateral presentation and mainly affects basal mucosa, it may also involve other sites like tongue and gingiva.
The etiology of OLP is not completely understood, howover, the characteristic histopathological criteria in OLP suggests a T-cell mediated immune response against basal keratinocytes of the mucosa, where the T-cell appear to mediate basal cell death through the triggering of apoptosis. This process is mediated by the action / interaction of many proteins and cell surface receptors. P53 protein is one of the positive apoptosis-regulating proteins which triggers apoptosis if the DNA damage in the cell can not be repaired.
