Abstract

This study was carried out at Zagazig University hospital, Internal Medicine Department and Nephrology Unit at the period between march 2000 to April 2002 in a trial to study the correlation between sialic acid (as a marker of acute phase-reactants) and pro-inflammatory cytokines (interleukin-6 and tumour necrosis factor-α) (as immune modulator of the acute-phase responses) in the pathophysiological aspects of diabetic microangiopathic complications.
60 diabetic patients and 10 healthy controls were included in this study. They were classified into 3 main groups and 2 subdivided groups. Group 1 Included 10 healthy control, Group II included 20 patients with type 1 diabetes, and Group III included 40 patients with type 2 diabetes .Then Group II and Group III were divided into two subgroups: Group IIa included type 1 diabetic patients with microvascular complications, Group IIb included type 1 diabetic patients without microvascular complications, Group IIIa included type 2 diabetic patients with microvascular complications and Group IIIb included type 2 diabetics patients without microvascular complications.
All subjects were subjected to full history taking, full clinical examinations, resting 12 leads electrocardiography, fundus examination using fundoscope and flurescence dye to detect diabetic retinopathy.
