Abstract

Cryptoblabes gnidiella Mill. (Lepidoptera:Pyralidae) reared on stored garlic under different constant temperature regimes. Exposure of 1-2 day old eggs to 5, 10 and 40°C resulted in 100% mortality in developing embryos. Larval duration varied from 11.3 to 25.1 days, while the pupal stage lasted for 21.3 days at 15°C and decreased to 6.3 days with increasing temperature to 35°C. A survey of C. gnidiella infestations on stored garlic bulbs in five different ecosystems viz.; Cairo, Qalyubyia, Ismailia, Alexandria and El-Minia Governorates revealed that bulbs were free from economic infestation at the first three months of storage from March to May and increased gradually from 3.07% in June to 8.78% in December. The four garlic cultivars under investigation (Egyptian [Baladi], Sids40, American and Chinese) differed in their content of volatile oils, the highest value was confined to the Egyptian cultivar, whereas the Chinese cultivar showed the lowest values. The correlation between infestation percentages and volatile oils was highly significant and negative.
