Abstract
The present study was done at the Internal Medicine department, Zagazig University Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, Zagazig Fever Hospital and EI-Korein general Hospital in Sharkia Governorate during the period from December 2000 to December 2002 The aim of this work was to study the coexistence of filariasis and chronic liver diseases either due to hepatic schistosomiasis and / or posthepatitic cirrhosis and its impact on the functional status of the liver.The study included 112 subjects (64 males and 48 females), 20 apparent healthy subjects were included (12 males and 8 females, their ages ranged form 24-46 years with a mean age 41.12 ± 12.5 years) and 92 patients with chronic liver disease (52 males and 40 females with ages ranged from 35-56 years with a mean age 43±11.5 years).All patients underwent thorough history taking, full clinical examination, abdominal and pelvic ultrasound and laboratory investigations including stool and urine analysis on three occasions,proctoscopy with rectal snip examination, liver function tests, hepatitis B&C markers, blood and ascitic fluid films for microfilaria and lastly serological tests for filariasis.The results of this study can be summarized as followings:-
There was high significant difference (P < 0.001) between the studied groups as regards filarial seropositivity and negativity.
