Abstract The study was carried out on 80 patients at the department of orthopaedic Surgery, Assiut University Hospital, during the period from August 1978 to May 1979. Sixty one cases were males and nineteen were females, their age ranging from three to twenty-five years. Most of the patients presented with deformities (fifty-two) which were measured by means of a geniometer. The residual muscle power was graded and the total percentage for the whole paralysed limb was calculated. Shortening was measured clinically by the direct method (80 patients) and was verified radiologically by two methods teleradiography in 6 patients and orthoroentgenography in 20 patients. All patients were suffering from shortening of the lower limbs varying from 11-37 m.m Different factors that might be responsible for shortening were studied, e.g. full weight bearing on the affected limb, relative muscle power of the two limbs, presence of deformitios, age of onset, duration of the disease, vascular changes and usage of braces. The first of them was the factor of function, i.e. full weight bearing on the affected limb. |
