Abstract

The diet during preschool age affects both current health and future growth and development. Dietary factors regulate growth at all stages of development as well as a time for developing good dietary habits. The mother is the first one responsible for the nutrition of their preschool children. Actually, the choice of preschool child diet arrangements is one of the most important decisions mothers make. Thus mother’s nutrition knowledge, beliefs and behavior regarding their children nutrition is an important factor influences the development of good dietary habits started early life and carried on into adulthood. The overall objective of the present study was to determine mother behavior regarding their children nutrition through the following: -Assessment of mother’s knowledge, beliefs regarding their children nutrition. -Assessment the impact of mother’s behavior regarding their children nutrition on the health status ”height, weight and morbidity of their children”. A random sample was selected from the list of the nursery school in Mansoura city. The sample size was 400 children aged 3-6 years represents about 20 of the nursery school. Two of the governmental and two of the non governmental nursery school. Data were collected through using interview questionnaires and review of nursery school to obtain data about: - Birth date, weight, height of the children. The questionnaire included data about. - socioeconomic status - children morbidity during the last three months - mother’s knowledge regarding nutritional requirement to their children. - Mother’s beliefs regarding preschool nutrition using the principle of health belief model component. A pilot study was carried out to test the reliability of the designed questionnaires. The questionnaires were tested on 20 mothers. Adjustments of the questionnaires were performed and put in its final form. The field work started on December 2000 to May 2001. once the questionnaire forms were filled, the collected data were coded, tabulated, and statistically analyzed.
