Abstract

All factors influencing growth and development of crop plants must be integrated to an optimum level if the maximum production potential is to be attained. Since leaves are the principal carrier of chlorophyll, an essential material for photosynthesis, their number and size must have a profound effect on production of crop plants. Recently much emphasis was concentrated on the rel?•:| between leaf area of crop plants and the other plant , growth attributes. This relation is of prine importance in order to relate the differential cultivar yielding 1 ability to those growth attributes. Variation o? ”leal area was a much more potent factor than variation- in nei; assimilation rate in determining differences in dry matter accumulation between cultivars (Watson, 194-7; Brougham, 1956; Shibles and Weber, 1965).
Nitrogen supply is among the important factors which affect plant development, yield and other characteristics of cotton. Studies of developmental processes of cotton plant in relation to nitrogen supply indicated that nitrogeneous components o:’ the various plant parts varied w’.th the external supply, but there was a considerable difference between parts of the plants in expressing the variability (Wadleigh, 1944-).
