Abstract The present study was carried out on 20 cases of umbilical granulomata and 30 normal neonates as a control group. The aim of this work was to study the role of local umbilical sepsis in the development of umbilical, granuloma. The cases and controls were subjected to detailed his¬tory including in particular, the site of delivery, type of cord dressing, time of cord separation and discharge or mass in the umbilicus. A swab for bacteriological study was taken from the umbilicus of every case and control. Prom the results of this study, it was found that 40% of granulomata were associated with delayed separation of the cord, Q7% of these cases with delayed cord separation-were found to use dusting powders in dressing. Dusting pgwders were used as cord dressing in 85% of cases, and in only 59% of controls. The commonest organism isolated in cases of granulom¬ata was staph. aureus (70%), also it was the commonest |
