Abstract

Advanced Oxidation Protein Products (AOPP) are formed during oxidative stress. They exert biological activities as induction of proinflammatory cytokines and adhesive molecules. They were implicated in the pathogenesis, progression and cell dysfunction associated with diabetes.

The current study was conducted to assess levels of AOPP in type 1 diabetics and correlate their levels with risk factors of microvascular complications. The study included 45 type 1 diabetics with age range between 8-17 years ( 12.2± 2.5). Twenty of whom have been suffering from microvascular complications (19 with nephropathy and/or retinopathy or neuropathy, and one with retinopathy).

Plasma AOPP levels were found to be higher in diabetics compared to controls regardless presence of microvascular complications. Also, plasma AOPP levels correlated with glycated hemoglobin(HbA1C).
