Abstract HCV in the major etiologic agent accused for worldwide cases of non—A,Non—B hepatitis. HCV was originally considered a transfusion—related disease. Recently, however, epidemiologic studies eatablished its occurence more frequently outside of the transfusion settings. Known high—risk group for HCV include transfusion recipients, intravenous drug abusers, heath care workers with frequent hlQod contact, and haemodialysis patients and staff members. To our knowlage this is f.Lrst report from Egyptstud.ing the prevalence of HCV in haemodialysis units. Fourty patients from 3 hospitals were tested to HCV antibody by first genera’.ion ELISA teet (Abbott Diagnostics). Their age ‘ang from 27—79 years with a mean age of 43 years for females and a mean age of 45 years for males. These patients had been on haemodialysis, fo.- chronic renal insuffiency, for a durtion ranging from 4 to 180 mounths. Fourty controls of the same age group were also tested for I-ICV antibodies. |
