Abstract The aim ot the present work is to study the 80c10econom10 and mediaal oharacteristics of long-term patients 1.e. those whose length of stay is 21 days or more in the seotions of general medicine and general surgery in Alax andria general hospitals. Four hospitals were chosen namely the Main University hoapital~ Rssa El-Teen hospital, Gamal Abdel Nasser hospital and Al-Moassat hospital. A sample size of 260 long-term patien’~s were studied through surveying botn sections in the four hospitals. An , interview sohedule was constructed to inolude sooioeconomic . data suoh as age, oooupation, family income, etc. in addition to infonnation about history of previous hospit alization, current diagnosis and the nature of oare provided on the day of interview. It also included the opinion of responsible re5idents regarding the appropriate length of stay and the faotors underlying delayed patient’s disoharga . The results showed that: 1- Patients of ?o years and more oonstituted 11.1. More then two-thirds (68.4) were either unskilled labourer or utlemp.J.oyed . |
