Abstract The thesis investigates the effect of load location on the • beams of single-bay, multi-bay, and multi-storey rectangular • • • frames on their elastic critical loads. The direct as well as the stiffness methods of analysis are used in this study. A comparative study between the two methods for the determination of the elastic critical loads of rectangular frames loaded away from the corners is made. Results showed that both the direct method -when the axial force in the beam is taken into consideration- and the stiffness method give the same elastic critical loads. The effect of both the change of the frame geometry under increasing loads and the magnitude of the disturbing force on the elastic critical loads of frames is studied. Results showed that the first effect is significant as the loads move away from the corners and the second affects the elastic critical loads of the frames and may change their critical mode. An extension to the physical meaning of the nonlinear behaviour of plane frame is produced to explain the behaviour of the modified stiffness matrix. Experimental tests are carried out and the results obtained are compared with the results from theoretical methods. A good agreement have been achieved between the experimental and the theoretical results when the frames are loaded at the corners. But the difference is appeared when the frames are loaded away from the corners |
